Republicans’ Are Skimming Off Political Froth

OIL SKIMMING BOAT

Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and his fellow cohorts now claim President Obama did not act quickly enough in response to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  McConnell appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” this past Sunday, and based his assertions on the premise that a Republican President would have brought a multitude of oil skimmers into the Gulf much sooner.

As is typical with many Republicans, this Palin-like “common sense” retort to complex problems is far too simplistic when set against the facts.

Besides, you don’t just move hundreds of oil-skimmers away from other critical areas – like harbors and ports – where ships and oil depot facilities routinely spill untold amounts of oil into the waters, having the potential to create smaller-scale environmental disasters.  Furthermore, how do they think – well actually, they obviously don’t – they could transfer hundreds of the smaller skimmers from, for instance, California to the Gulf of Mexico?   Would they sail in the treacherous waters down the Pacific coast of Central America and through the Panama Canal in such small watercraft?

Not if their asses were on the line.

Are Republicans really interested in fixing this country’s problems?

Then first start by skimming all the political B.S. off your claims.

Come On In, the Water’s Nice and . . .

WTF?!?

For all you people who supported Sarah Palin’s “Drill, Baby, Drill” policy, and are now living on ocean-front property along the Gulf Coast or the Atlantic Seaboard – what’s that old saying regarding the three things that determine the value of real estate?

Location, Location and Location.”

Damn that nasty little Law of Unintended Consequences!?!

NOTE:  the above graphic simulation (and it is graphic) projects where the Gulf Stream current will carry the oil slick over time based on an experimental placement of dye in the Gulf waters, measured over a two month period.  [graphic courtesy of NOAA - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration]

Yes, Sarah “Drill Baby Drill”, Now We Get It . . .

BP EXECUTIVE TESTIFYING ABOUT 2006 OIL SPILL  (promising no future spills)

So, Sarah Palin, let me try and clarify this really twisted, illogical construct.

Because some Americans – present company included – insisted that certain environmentally-protected areas be deemed off-limits from oil exploration because of the risk that oil spills would destroy those fragile eco-systems, we are the one’s at fault for BP’s deep-water drilling disaster?  Because the U.S. would not have had to open up deep-water off-shore drilling to the oil companies  – thus resulting in the BP Gulf oil spill – if they had been allowed to drill in these protected areas?

As Andrew Sullivan of The Atlantic magazine so eloquently labeled your preposterous argument:  From The Annals of Chutzpah

It’s not the utter stupidity of the argument that is most disturbing to me.  I have come to expect nothing less from you.  It’s the fact that a significant minority of Americans actually think you are smart, and should lead this country.

That is why you scare the Hell out of me, Sarah Palin.

Because you should scare the Hell out of every American.

And you don’t.

Rand Paul’s First Slip & Fall – Down the Rabbit Hole of the American Political Landscape

LIBERTARIAN DUALITY SYMBOL

Within 24 hours of getting the first Tea Party nomination for a major political office in the United States, Kentucky Senatorial candidate Rand Paul already committed his first political faux pas in his equivocation regarding a key component of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

In an interview last night on MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show, Rand was pressed by Maddow to state whether or not he would oppose the key provision under the landmark legislation prohibiting private sector discrimination based on race.  Rand categorically denied that he was a racist and insisted that this position, based on Libertarian principles which philosophically oppose government intervention in the private sector, was the basis for his argument that this portion of the legislation was flawed and that he would not support it.

Today, Rand backtracked from his political posture last night, now saying that he would not advocate for the repeal of the legislation, in whole or part.  He said that appearing on Maddow’s show was a “poor political decision” – inferring that her questioning was another Sarah Palin, liberal media “gotcha” moment.  He complained to Maddow about her line of questioning during the interview, claiming that the issue of private property owners’ rights under the law was “an abstract, obscure conversation from 1964 that you bring up … You bring up something that really is not an issue.”

I like Rand Paul.  I don’t believe for one moment that he is a racist.  Neither does Rachel Maddow, and her questioning was not a hatchet job.  She is sincerely interested in how Libertarian purists might dismantle 235 years of constitutional interpretation and legislation.  I watched the interview, and her questions were fair.  Moreover, I think both Rand and his father, Ron Paul, are well-intentioned, intelligent anti-establishment politicians.  There is ample room for men of their intellectual and philosophical stature under the tent of American politics.  But their positions on serious political and legislative matters must be explored.

Unfortunately for Rand, that is why his alignment with principles of Libertarianism, and the Tea Party’s deep criticism of prior legislation like the Civil Rights Act of 1964 does make it an issue.  If the Tea Party candidates are going to run on a platform that advocates for the dismantling of any and all government regulation affecting private property rights, they have to accept the fact that critics have good reason to question their intentions regarding repeal of prior legislation, and what those actions would mean for ten’s of millions of Americans.

Most people are not familiar with Libertarianism – a modern, free market philosophy – it eschews government interference in any aspect of private life, while advocating for freedom of speech and behavior, so long as it does not harm anyone.  Of course, in theory, it all sounds very enticing.  I personally considered myself to once be a Libertarian.

However, that all began to change after recognizing that those among us who have more “freedom” – as in money or power - will utilize that advantage in order to quash or interfere with the freedom of others to pursue their own goals and dreams.  What I often hear in response is that “life isn’t fair” – inequities will always exist.

If that is so, we are headed back to a time when robber barons and monopolists are allowed to manipulate and “game the system” for their own devices.  Wall Street’s domination of the finanical landscape is a case in point.  Once they have wrested complete control or dominated an intolerable degree of economic and political life in America, social unrest and anarchy will inevitably rule the day.  Case in point:  the colonial revolt against England in 1776.  I would think Rand Paul and the Tea Party might see the irony in that.

Even Adam Smith – author of Wealth of Nations, and the father of free markets – recognized that government intervention was a necessary evil.  For those of you who doubt this, read the book (here is a free online edition).  I did over thirty years ago. And I have read it several times since then.  Smith was a closet “socialist” (with a small “s”).  The principle underlying his whole theory was the overall social good would be elevated by HARNESSING – as in placing a bridle on – greed.  When you harness a horse – you keep it under control.  You do not let it run completely free.

Libertarians think the horse should never be bridled; under any circumstances.  The law of unintended consequences will always come into play when you let a horse run wild.

For that reason alone, Rand Paul must accept the reality of having to go down the rabbit hole of American politics.

Just go ask Alice . . . or Barry Goldwater.

Sarah Palin As Seen Through the Prism of Alaskan Politics & Culture

Sarah Palin is a political lightening rod in America.  You either love her or disdain her.

Nevertheless, if you honestly want to know who Sarah Palin really isread this commentary regarding Wally Hickel; a man who was deeply immersed in Alaskan and national politics for over 40 years; a man who as a previous two-term Alaska governor, initially supported Sarah Palin when she ran for the state’s highest office; a man who later lived to regret that decision.

Yesterday, Wally Hinkel’s life was celebrated on radios and televisions all across the State of Alaska, as he was publically layed to rest.

Palin lamely attempted to pay tribute to Hickel’s enormous public service, intentionally highlighting only his achievements that fit her own personal political agenda.

It was Wally Hickel who, metaphorically speaking, had the last word.  He made one of his most powerful political statements in the last year before passing on; an opinion that ironically allows Wally to speak from beyond his grave, and a comment that says volumes about Sarah Palin:

“I don’t give a damn about her.”

                                                          -Wally Hickel 1919-2010

May he rest in peace.

Because many of us will not, so long as this fraud continues to cast her long, dark shadow over the American political landscape.

Another Conservative Family Values Guy Falls Victim to the Irresistable Lure of the Forbidden Fruit

DA COOCHIE MONSTA

COOCHIEa term referencing part of the female anatomy located anterior to the rectum and posterior to the lower abdomen, between the upper thighs. It is an opening, varying in size and appearance, that is commonly used for the sexual gratification of the male species; or in the case of the female species, when stimulated by small appendages, mechanically vibrating devices, certain vegetables, cigar holders, or other assorted cylindrical-shaped objects (Yes, I used a little poetic license in crafting part of this definition, for all you plagiarism detectives).

Another one bites the dust . . .

What is up with these Conservative Family Values guys?  First, they go after President Bill Clinton in the 1990’s.  Hey, Newt Gingrich - do you recall leading the charge, after dumping your cancer-ridden first wife for some young coochie, and just prior to dumping your second wife for another newer piece of coochie?  Now days they just act contrite only AFTER they have been outed.  Senators David Vitter and John Ensign, as well as Governor Mark Sanford all come to mind - and those are just a few of the more recent Republican Bible-thumping philanderers.

What is even more incredulous is the fact that today’s Conservative Family Values guy – Republican Congressman Mark Souder (R-IN) – recorded a video with his little coochie-girl, advocating abstinence.  Oh yea, she was also on his Congressional Staff – obviously both literally and figuratively.

So what I gleen from all of this is that abstaining from abstinence and abstaining from marital fidelity are not morally equivalent for these guys?  What great role models for our kids – eh, Sarah and Bristol Palin?

A few little nuggets of wisdom for all you moral hypocrites:

1)  A man is just a human being with two heads and only enough blood to run one of them at a time;

2)  There usually ain’t enough prayer in the world to resist the call of the sirens  (“wild coochie”).  Just ask Ulysses.  Approximately 3000 years ago, this dude had himself tied to the mast of a ship by his sailors so as not to succumb to the desires of the flesh brought on by the beckon call of these seductresses; in the process, he damn near lost his freakin’ mind trying to resist the temptation to throw caution to the wind – as in throw his sorry ass into the ocean -so he could swim to shore just to get in on some of that action.  Legend had it that it meant certain death (NO SH!T, geniuses – as in expensive and painfully public divorces?);

3)  Coochie Monsters are born, not made.  They are called men.

See you all in Hell!

P.S.  Bring your own ice.

NO SH!T, NY Times?!?

It’s not like we had to be informed of this recent discovery

Now, do you have any real news to report?

Sarah Palin: “Spill Baby Spill”

Hey Sarah “Drill Baby Drill” Palin?

About a month ago you called President Obama’s new energy proposal, “Stall, Baby Stall“.

Let me guess – you are working on your next great idea - putting a floating oil refinery in the Gulf of Mexico to process that crude oil spill out there?  That’ll fix it . . .

You betcha!

UPDATE:  Sarah.  Would you like to try some of our new Louisiana Cajun “Black Broth” Gumbo?  Oh, and do you and Todd need a fleet of used shrimpboats?   These guys cannot make the payments on their boats anymore due to some politicians’ defense of off-shore drilling policies.

Sarah Palin Nuked Her Own Brain

It’s obvious Sarah Palin must have put her head in the microwave oven somewhere along the way.

In her most recent comments regarding President Obama’s nuclear weapons policy, Palin tried to belittle Obama by claiming that his only knowledge of the topic was gained through “his vast nuclear experience that he acquired as a community organizer and as a full-time candidate.”

Excuse me?  Palin sees a full-time candidate every morning when she looks in the mirror.

But more to the point.  What Palin obviously does not even know is that as a first-term junior U.S. Senator with a coveted seat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Obama introduced his first major piece of legislation in 2005 with Republican co-sponsor Senator Richard Lugar, Chairman of the committee.  Known as the  Lugar-Obama proliferation and threat reduction initiative, it was designed to limit proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), as well as expand the State Department’s ability to find and interdict weapons and materials designed for this purpose – particularly nuclear weapons.

Betcha didn’t know that one, Sarah?!?

Moreover, when she stated that the Obama Adminstration “treated the Afghan President poorly”- referring to President Obama’s direct and unambiguous criticism of Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s unwillingness to root out corruption and fraud within his own government – she explicitly ignores the fact that his government is financed by and exists only with the support of the United States taxpayer; that Afghanistan has virtually no Gross Domestic Product – as in an economy, Sarah; that Afghanistan’s largest export – opium - directly provides the world with an unending supply of heroin, while simultaneously financing the Taliban and Al Qaeda; and last, but not least, there is strong evidence that President Karzai’s brother is heavily involved in this game of drug trafficking and revenue-sharing with the terrorists organizations.

Yet she maintains that we should continue to finesse Afghanistan, but not Iran.  She thinks we should finesse Pakistan, but not North Korea.  She believes we should “quit coddling our enemies”, and that we should “respect” our allies –  in spite of their unwillingness to respect our own national security interests.  Sarah, here is what happens when you coddle an ally too much:

1)  As you keep throwing more and more money at them – $21 Billion to be exact, in U.S. foreign aid given to Pakistan from 2001 through 2008 - you perpetuate their willful impotence and institutional corruption.  The Bush Administration kept former Pakistani leader General Musharaff propped-up with U.S. taxpayer’s money for seven years with a promise from Pakistan that it would root out and pursue terrorists operating in its own territories.  They did little or nothing.  It was only after the Democrats had taken back control of Congress in 2006 and then threatened to pull the plug on Pakistan’s foreign aid, that Bush reluctantly decided it was time to “get tough” with Musharaff.

2)  You cannot allow your ally’s sovereignty to be paramount to your own national security.  Republican Presidential candidate John McCain – do you even recall who his V.P. running-mate was, Sarah (?) –  stated that he (McCain) would not violate Pakistan’s sovereignty by going after terrorists in it’s territory if elected President.  In deep contrast to that “coddle your friends” policy, President Obama made it clear on numerous occasions while on the campaign trail that if Pakistan would not do the job, he would!  Shortly after President Obama took the oath of office, he made good on his word.  And guess what, Sarah?  Our terrorist enemies in Pakistan do not sleep well at night anymore – as this blog noted some 90 days ago.

3) When the U.S. taxpayer funds $21 Billion in foreign aid under the pretense that it is going to make our country safer, they want a President who is going to make sure that the recipients give us our money’s worth.  President Obama immediately recognized that Pakistan’s government was full of graft and corruption, and that it was doing nothing about ousting the terrorists, so he pressed them very hard on the issue - unlike Bush and Cheney – and Pakistan has demonstrated a whole new attitude about going after the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Moreover, they have kept their damn mouths shut about the U.S. “violating their sovereignty” with our incessant and terrifying drone attacks – thus giving the terrorists a taste of their own medicine after seven years of U.S. impotence.

President Obama is now sending the same message to Afghan President Karzai  – PUT UP, OR SHUT UP!

HMMMMMMMMMMM . . .

Amazing how that all works, eh Sarah???

If Palin thinks – and I use the term “think” very loosely in her case - that she has any standing to criticize President Obama’s foreign policy experience, let’s look at the facts.  In the previous Presidential election campaign, Palin couldn’t even identify the Bush Doctrine when asked by Charlie Gibson of ABC news - damn those “gotcha journalists”, Sarah.  Moreover, that she is not even aware of President Obama’s own prior nuclear proliferation legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate back in 2005 speaks for itself.

Here is the reality for Sarah Palin’s political supporters:  well-timed platitudes and folksy quotes are not going to make this country more secure.  To the contrary.  And our enemies would be more than happy to exploit such blatant foreign policy inexperience and unprecedented ignorance of publically available information.  The information contained in this post is not rocket science, and easily accessible to even a 5th grader, Sarah.

Most glaring though, is The Anchorage Daily News’ – as in Alaska’s largest newspaper – recent acknowledgement that “she has little or no foreign policy experience.”.  If  she cannot even get an endorsement from her own home state newspaper on this very important issue . . . well, that speaks volumes.

Which all leaves no doubt that the terrorists are just drooling at the prospect of her being elected President in 2012.

Sarah Palin’s Speech to Teabaggers in Nevada is Utterly Dead Right on Message

Sarah Palin Hunts Down and Proudly Kills Liberty

Sarah Palin addressed thousands of Tea Party activists on Saturday in the desert outside of Searchlight, Nevada – home of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.  You do not have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that the location of this rally was not coincidental.

True to form, Sarah was right on message for a Tea Party leader when giving her speech:

“What we are doing, folks, we are rolling up our sleeves and we are getting down to business and getting back to the common sense conservative principles that made this country the greatest country on earth, and we are not going to sit down and shut up.”

In other words folks, we are going to continue to harass, intimidate, threaten, terrorize, and otherwise utilize whatever scare tactics are necessary in order to utterly vanquish the opposition so that we can rule the United States with our fire-brand, scorched-earth, “take-no-prisoners” politics.

Couldn’t have said better myself, Sarah.
