Where Did All the Money Go For Iraq Reconstruction? Hint, Hint, Hint . . .

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) cannot account for $8.7 Billion of the $9.1 Billion allocated for the rebuilding of Iraq – that is 96% of the money.
96% of the money just vanished?
The Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction (SIGIR) has just released a report outlining the extent of the problem, and made recommendations for a plan that will ensure future accountability of the expenditures. Think that hindsight might be a little short of 20/20 vision? How about $8.7 Billion U.S. taxpayer dollars short?
Hey, Mitch McConnell! Now there is some deficit-busting waste and fraud. How about going after Halliburton and it’s executives for that money? Oh, I almost forgot. You’re programmed to just say “No”.
What’s that old saying . . . follow the money? First, check with “Slick” Dick Cheney and KBR – the Halliburton subsidiary that was awarded the no-bid contract for reconstruction of Iraq. Somewhere deep in that corrupt wallet rife with fraud, they will be certain to find some of that cash. Oh, and by the way, you are not the only one who was curious how KBR just happened to get a no-bid contract for an unjustified war that Dick Cheney – former CEO for Hallburton – was instrumental in orchestrating.
Adding insult to injury, KBR hired 10,000 of its American workers through an offshore shell company that exists in a computer file on the 4th floor of a building in the Cayman Islands. That allowed KBR to avoid withholding millions of dollars in Federal Social Security and Medicare taxes. DoD discovered this in 2004, but said nothing, because it saved money on the reconstruction budget. And now DoD cannot even account for 96% of the money?
After all of these issues were brought out into the light of day, and investigations into widespread corruption started ramping-up, Halliburton immediately relocated its corporate headquarters to Dubai, ostensibly for business reasons. Talk about pouring salt into the wound.
Mission Accomplished?
At least for ”Slick” Dick and his Halliburton cronies, it was. Right up the U.S. taxpayers wahzoo – and he didn’t even have the common courtesy to kiss us on the back of the neck when he was done. No heart, no soul, no shame, and no accountability. Nothing but a big fat capital gain on your Halliburton stock.
All from war profiteering with the spilled blood of young American men and women on your hands.
There will be a special pit in Hell for you, Slick Dick.

Remember how “vibrant” the economy was at the end of the Bush Era?
Recall that when Bush left office in January of 2009, the U.S. budget deficit was at an historical all-time high, roughly $1.3 Trillion .
So now Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell claims that the Bush Tax Cuts “increased revenue, because of the vibrancy of these tax cuts in the economy.”
What an inexplicable disconnect between his statement and the foregoing facts regarding the economic collapse brought on by the Global Financial Crisis in 2008, and the deficits a majority of Americans agree that Bush hung around Obama’s neck; deficits that were unprecedented in relation to previous Administrations. It’s patently obvious that McConnell operates from a parallel universe where the laws of basic math and logic don’t apply.
As Ezra Klein of the Washington Post so kindly put it, “it’s enough to make you very, very sad.”
What’s even more unbelievable is how McConnell and the Republicans attempt to blister Obama and the Democrats on taxes, spending and deficits, all while ignoring the most blatant evidence of what the Republicans did after inheriting Clinton’s budget surplus. To describe this behavior in terms of an hypocrisy is an understatement.
So now the country seems inclined to put these guys back in power?
That is utterly terrifying.

Republicans’ Are Skimming Off Political Froth

OIL SKIMMING BOAT
Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and his fellow cohorts now claim President Obama did not act quickly enough in response to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. McConnell appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” this past Sunday, and based his assertions on the premise that a Republican President would have brought a multitude of oil skimmers into the Gulf much sooner.
As is typical with many Republicans, this Palin-like “common sense” retort to complex problems is far too simplistic when set against the facts.
Besides, you don’t just move hundreds of oil-skimmers away from other critical areas – like harbors and ports – where ships and oil depot facilities routinely spill untold amounts of oil into the waters, having the potential to create smaller-scale environmental disasters. Furthermore, how do they think – well actually, they obviously don’t – they could transfer hundreds of the smaller skimmers from, for instance, California to the Gulf of Mexico? Would they sail in the treacherous waters down the Pacific coast of Central America and through the Panama Canal in such small watercraft?
Not if their asses were on the line.
Are Republicans really interested in fixing this country’s problems?
Then first start by skimming all the political B.S. off your claims.
Republicans Suddenly “Get Religion” On Financial Reform?

Several weeks ago Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell and Senator John Cornyn, leader of the National Republican Senatorial Committee – a principle Republican campaign fund-raising organization – flew to New York City to meet with Wall Street. Looming on the “dark horizon” was another long and bitter battle with President Obama and the Democrats over the proposed financial reform bill. It was safe to assume that Republicans would drag this one out like they did health care reform so as to impact the coming Fall mid-term elections.
True to form, McConnell and Cornyn made their pitch to the money-changers sitting in the temple – which was 25 Wall Street executives and hedge fund managers. The two powerful Senators made it very clear that in order for the Republicans to have any chance to take back control of the Senate and the House, they would need Wall Street’s assistance. As one anonymous Wall Street executive in attendance so eloquently put it, “There was no arm twisting, but they did say that we should feel uncomfortable living in any country where one party has unfettered ability to pass anything [legislation] . . . President Obama dreams up.”
I hope I don’t have to spell out what the Republicans quid pro quo was? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ . . . and lots of it.
So upon the Senator’s return to Washington, McConnell immediately announces that the Republicans are united in their oppostion to the Democrats’ financial reform bill, and they will utilize every procedural move to block the proposed regulatory-laden legislation because it will risk future tax-payer bailouts. That was just two weeks ago.
Fast forward one week, with one big freakin’ revelation about Goldman Sachs’ “gaming the system” to the $1 Billion detriment of several of their institutional clients, as well as proposals for much stronger derivatives regulation coming out of another Senate committee – and the Republicans are caught in a trap that they set for themselves.
Yet, in spite of the fact that the Republicans suddenly reversed course and were quickly backing away from supporting their Wall Street financiers, appearing more conciliatory towards President Obama and the Democrats than they have in more than 14 months, Mitch McConnell would have you believe that he has the Democrats on the ropes.
McConnell seems to think he should get credit for forcing the Democrats to negotiate. Senator Chris Dodd, Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee and author of the pending legislation, responded to McConnell’s baseless bragging, saying this:
“That is like a rooster taking credit for the sunrise.”
YEP!
UPDATE: Now after two days of filbustering and holding up floor debate on financial reform, McConnell got those Democrats to negotiate again – or was it get the voters to forget about the GOP’s siding with Wall Street by November?
Allah Bama is Holding America Hostage For a Whole Side of Pork – Isn’t That Against Their Religion?

Allah Bama’s Monument to Pork Barrel Spending
Are Republicans really serious about pork-barrel spending? What about national security? How about the War in Afghanistan that they have been paying so much lip service to since 9/11 – as in 2001?
One has to wonder as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and the rest of the party stands silent, and defenseless (or so they act), as fellow Republican Senator Richard Shelby (R-Alabama) just hung a whole side of pork around the necks of his own party members. Believe it or not, Shelby contends it’s all done in the name of critical national security, when it’s really for the sake his home state – Allah Bama.
Since when did building tanker refueling planes constitute a critical national security issue when compared to personally holding up the appointment of seventy – count them, 70 – presidential nominees to various government positions. What is most glaring is that one of these appointees is designated to become the top Department of Defense point-man for managing deployments to Afghanistan.
Is Senator Shelby providing comfort and support to the terrorists? After all, isn’t that the standard moniker Republicans try to hang around the Democrats’ necks everytime they delay anything regarding national security?
Let’s see? Building refueling tankers in the next five years or ensuring proper deployment of soldiers to Afghanistan in the next five months? The choice is not exactly rocket science. Anyone want to argue this one with young American soldiers’ lives on the line?
Go ahead . . . make my day.
Even Conservative writers and bloggers have weighed-in against Shelby’s political grandstanding, pointing out that there is no legitimate basis for holding up the business of the whole Senate confirmation process over pork-barrel spending. Daniel Larison of The American Conservative magazine said it best:
With this kind of irrational thinking, Shelby could probably even make a case for the critical national security aspect of his $819,000 Catfish Genome Project down there in the bayou that was awarded in 2009. You know, they have to serve those tanker refueling plane pilots something while they are up in the air for those long overseas flights to Afghanistan.
Wunder if dat der Vulcan feller is feedin’ dem catfish pork rinds? 
Homer Simpson Republicans Terrorize U.S. Over Terrorists’ Trials

Terrorism is about creating fear.
Republicans are now clearly trying to create fear in the minds of the American public about the Obama Administration’s prosecution of terrorists in civilian courts. They are insinuating several things: one, that terrorists are “enemy combatants”, and therefore should be tried in military courts; two, that allowing them to be tried in civilian courts will only invite another attack on U.S. soil; third that these defendants are not entitled to any constitutional rights; and finally, that Obama is soft on terrorism.
These constitutional law geniuses include half-term Governor Sarah Palin (R-Alaska), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), former Vice President Dick Cheney (Chief Republican Hypocrite – Washington, D.C.), and Chief Conservative spokesman Rush Limbaugh (former drug addict, and college drop-out).
Amazing how incensed these Conservatives are about this “recent” decision to take accused terrorists to trial in civilian courts, particularly after the Bush Administration tried over ONE HUNDRED FIFTY terrorists in the same federal courts, including such high-profile cases as 9/11 co-conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui and shoe bomber Richard Reid.
Just in case any of you other hypocrites out there have also conveniently forgotten, Reid was going to blow up a plane on an international flight bound for the U.S.
“D’oh“!
P.S. Since yesterday, when this was posted, Senator Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.) has proposed cutting off federal funding for terrorists trials in civil court. Add his name to the rapidly growing list of Homer Simpson constitutional law geniuses and conservative hypocrites.

President Obama has been beyond a huge disappointment.
The reasons for his significant failure in the first year of his Presidency are varied, and yesterday I read a very insightful essay on MSN Money by Paul B. Farrell of the Wall Street Journal’s Market Watch that hones in on a number of opportunities Obama could have seized upon as a result of the financial collapse that would have allowed him to increase the already significant political capital that he possessed on the day of his inauguration.
In the simplest parlance - he blew it!
This writer will have more to say on the specifics of those issues, but that is for another entry posted here on this blog. More importantly for purposes of today’s entry, I offer a humble mea culpa for my idealistic beliefs that this man was really different from all the others. I pride myself on being intellectually honest enough to admit that I was wrong about Obama’s willingness to effectuate any substantial change in this country with acumen and finesse. How stupid of me to believe that he would really first focus on the one issue that was at the forefront of every voter’s mind since November, 2007 - one year before the 2008 election – and has continuously been the leading issue for the past two years.
In the words of James Carville’s famous political mantra for the 1992 Clinton campaign, “It’s The Economy Stupid!”
Suddenly this week, the President finally has this incredible revelation that he needs to place the issue of the economy, as well as attend to financial system reform, at the top if his agenda? President Obama – how could you and all of these ostensibly intelligent people you surrounded yourself with have possibly missed that most salient and readily available information? Why did you not immediately address the failure of our economic system in it’s present form to serve the interests of its citizens, and redress the ongoing transgressions by the men who were responsible for single-handedly wrecking the underpinnings of American Capitalism? Why did you not implement substantial changes in how our economy is managed by imposing strict accountability, transparency and limitations on how the banking industry operated? Why did you trust that these financial terrorists would not not rob the national treasury for their own personal gain, instead turning a blind eye to their obvious avarice and indifference to the economic welfare of the country? Why did you not instruct Tim Geithner and the Treasury Department to direct the lending institutions to focus all of that available financial capital at shoring-up businesses and home values in order to preserve the essential assets so critical to the future of the American people, instead of bailing out these corrupt and incompetent financial giants? Why did you not utilize the available “bully pulpit” to chastise both your party and the Republicans for their unwillingness to use their legislative powers to immediately reign in these predatory financial giants, because of the “river of dirty money” (campaign contributions) running through Washington, D.C.?
Instead, you choose to ignore the over-arching importance of these matters, and wasted all of your hard-earned political capital by rubber-stamping the bailouts, and then embarking on an agenda of reforming an equally complex and failed health care system – a pathway that was historically fraught with political pitfalls and epic battles against powerful wealthy corporate interests. Anyone studying the history of American health care reform would know that simple fact.
Now, before any of you Conservatives start hooting and hollering in celebration of my criticism of the President, or my ”concession” regarding his obvious failures, let me inform you that your intellectual dishonesty for the past decade has been nothing short of shameful. Lest you think you are blameless, your willful ignorance of, as well as refusal to admit, the abysmal failure of your leaders, party, spokespersons, and Conservative media to improve the status of this country and its people - particularly Bush, Cheney, Palin, McCain, Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Fox News, etc. - is completely reprehensible, and gives you no standing to believe that you have something to crow about.
You don’t.
In fact, part and parcel of Obama’s inability to effectuate change has been due to the ”political noise” you either countenenced or participated in during the election campaign in the Fall of 2008 as a substitute for reasoned and measured dialogue about what was wrong with this country. Labeling him a Muslim – when nothing is further from the truth, and cheering on those who claimed that he was “palling around with terrorists“, willfully distracted the American public from what was really at stake for the future of our country. Many of you continued to increase the sound of that chorus to a deafening roar after he was elected with the most utter nonsense – first claiming he was not a citizen in spite of the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, as well as charging that he is a Socialist, hellbent on destroying the foundations of this nation, when in fact his predecessors that you supported, as well as their corrupt political business cronies, had already virtually accomplished that objective.
In so much as you have fostered and perpetuated these opinions by either expressed belief or passive silence as to the truth, you are partially responsible for the demise of this republic. Your behavior is utterly Un-American. It is an absolute certainty that history will be far less kind to you than it will be to President Obama.
Shame on you.
And if you happen to choke to death on your teabags, oh well . . .
Wonder If They Can Help the Democrats Grow Testicles?

Scientists at Wake Forest University Medical Center claimed that they have succeeded in growing artificial penises in male rabbits using similar cells from another male rabbit. The study was reported to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and has given given great promise for humans who are missing particular organs in their own bodies.
One of the researchers working on the project said he “is hoping the the procedure will work with people, perhaps starting with adult men who have had damage to their organs.”
Hey, I will donate my testicles in order to help any number of those spineless Democrats in Washington who hold a Congressional majority to finally stand up to the likes of Joe Lieberman, Olympia Snowe, John Boehner, or Mitch McConnell and tell them to stick their heads where the sun never shines.
I will make this sacrifice for my country and report to Wake Forest University Medical Center at the first call to duty. Just let me know if any of you Democrats have the balls, figuratively speaking, to take me up on this offer since most of you obviously do not have any balls, literally speaking.
Bipartisanship is just another word for “nothin’ left to lose.”
